Turkish compulsory traffic insurance only covers Turkish-registered vehicles. If you drive a foreign-plated car in Turkey — whether visiting or living here — you need a specific foreign plate policy (Yabancı Plakalı Araç Sigortası).
Border gendarmerie check insurance on entry. Driving without a valid foreign plate policy results in fines and impoundment of your vehicle.

Foreign plate insurance questions
Is foreign plate insurance required at the Turkish border?
Yes. Border gendarmerie check insurance validity on entry into Turkey. You can be turned back without a valid foreign plate policy. We recommend arranging cover before you travel to avoid delays at the crossing.
How long can I drive a foreign plate car in Turkey?
Turkish law allows foreign-plated vehicles to remain in the country for up to 6 months per visit. After 6 months the vehicle must be exported or formally registered in Turkey. Policies are issued for up to 6 months and can be extended before expiry.
Can I get insurance for any country's plates?
Ikamet Sigorta covers most European and Middle Eastern plates. Contact us with your vehicle details — make, model, year, plate number, and country of registration — and we will confirm availability and issue a quote.
What if I have an accident?
Contact the insurer's 24/7 claims line — the number is on your policy document. Ikamet Sigorta provides English-language support throughout the claims process, including help communicating with the insurer and Turkish authorities if required.
Can I extend my policy if I stay longer than expected?
Yes. Policies can be extended before they expire. Contact Ikamet Sigorta at least 2 weeks before your expiry date to arrange a renewal. Do not let the policy lapse — driving without cover is a criminal offence in Turkey.
