The 8-Year Rule

What counts — and what resets the clock.

Counting the 8 years

The 8-year period begins on the date your first legal residence permit was issued — not the date you arrived in Turkey. All time spent on valid residence permits counts, including short-term, family, student, and most work permits. Tourist visa stays, e-visa periods, and visa-free entries do not count. Ikamet calculates your exact eligibility date from your permit history.

Absences — the 6-month rule

Total absences from Turkey must not exceed 6 months across the entire 8-year period. Exceeding this threshold may reset your 8-year clock — meaning you would need to restart from your next permit issuance. Certain absences (compulsory military service, serious medical treatment with documentation) may be exempt. Ikamet reviews your full travel history before you apply.

Application timing

You must apply within 60 days of reaching your 8-year eligibility date. There is no grace period beyond this window. If you miss it, you continue to hold your short-term permit and may apply again at the next opportunity. Ikamet tracks your eligibility date and sends you a reminder when the window opens.

Documents

What you need to apply.

The long-term permit application requires a complete history of your legal residence in Turkey. Missing permits or gaps in documentation will delay processing. Ikamet helps you compile and verify your full document pack.
